What is a normal blood pressure for a 24-year-old woman?

July 16, 2001 -- For adult women age 18 and older, a blood pressure less than 130/85 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) is considered normal, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. An even lower blood pressure -- below 120/80 mmHg -- is optimal for reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke, says the Institute.

In my experience, it is not uncommon for young women to have a surprisingly low blood pressure reading. As long as it is not a sudden drop, this is usually healthy. You should report unusually low readings to your healthcare provider, however. Symptoms associated with low blood pressure that may require immediate medical attention include lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting, chest pain, a racing or irregular heart beat, shortness of breath, or severe fatigue.

On the other hand, many women have blood pressures that are too high. In fact, more than 25 million American women have hypertension -- defined as a systolic blood pressure of at least 140 mmHg and a diastolic pressure of at least 90 mmHg. The systolic, or upper blood pressure number, measures the force of blood pulsing against your artery walls while your heart is beating. The pressure between beats, when your heart is resting, is called the diastolic pressure (the lower blood pressure number).

There are several health concerns with high blood pressure. Hypertension puts a huge strain on your arteries and heart. This can lead to heart attacks, hardening of the arteries, kidney problems, strokes, blindness, or even death. Studies have shown that even a high-normal blood pressure (between 139/89 mmHg and 130/85 mmHg) can place you at increased risk for developing these diseases.

The National Institutes of Health advises women to have their blood pressures checked professionally at least once every two years. If the measurement exceeds 130/85, talk to your provider about having it read more frequently. A blood pressure that remains abnormally elevated (140/90 or greater) on three or more occasions indicates hypertension.

At any age, I recommend that you work with your physician to keep your blood pressure as close to normal as possible. In some cases medications may be necessary. Lifestyle modifications -- such as consuming more fruits and vegetables, limiting salt, losing weight, getting regular exercise, and not smoking -- are usually extremely helpful, too.
