Sometimes the condom breaks. Do you know what your risks are, and what your actions should be?

I was recently with someone and the condom broke. I looked at what was left of it after it happened, and it appeared to be all there. Afterward, I was experiencing an itching feeling but I thought it was because the condom had spermicide on it and that maybe I was allergic to it. Then about four days later when I used the bathroom, a piece of the condom came out. What kind of health issues can happen if a piece of a condom is inside a woman that long? Also, is it possible that the condom being inside me could make my period late?
Answer:
Unless you have a latex allergy, the main health risk for having that shred of condom inside of you is the risk of pregnancy from ejaculate leakage when the condom shredded. Ejaculate leakage leading to pregnancy can cause a period to be late. But if you have been upset or worried about this episode, then that, itself, can cause your period to be late.
If the condom accident was at least two weeks ago, you can get a sensitive urine pregnancy test at a clinic (or a drugstore one -- be sure to use non-diluted urine). If the test is negative, your cycle is likely late from the stress of the accident. Ultimately, I would suggest getting the pregnancy test at a gynecology clinic so you have the chance to get some follow-up if the test is negative and your period still does not arrive. Also, if you are a regular condom user, you might want to get a prescription from the clinic for the emergency contraceptive pill to be used if an accident like that ever happens again.
