Is breast pain normal, or should I be concerned about cancer?

Breast pain, in the absence of a palpable lump or concern, 99% of the time is not related to cancer. However, it is related to hormonal fluctuations or strenuous activity with the upper body. It comes from irritations of the nerves within your tissue, thus the pains. The fact that these are transient, intermittent, and not in the same place is very reassuring because it means that it is merely breast pain. This can be bothersome to women, but as I already said, rarely is it related to cancer.

Fibrocystic breast condition is a variation of normal breast tissue, and it just means that your breasts are more lumpy/bumpy on examination. Cysts are part of this, and they are fluid-filled sacs that come and go, particularly in relation to your menstrual cycle. (As your hormones surge, the nerves in your breast tissue become more sensitive and the result is aching, shooting pains, or dull soreness.)

Caffeine, salt, and chocolate can make breast discomfort worse, so limiting these can help. The best way to manage breast discomfort is to wear a supportive bra 23 hours a day, even for sleeping, but it can come off when bathing. By limiting movement, comfort is improved. Some women find that 800 IU of vitamin E a day and/or 500 mg of evening primrose oil three times a day are helpful in reducing discomfort, but this is based on anecdotal reports from women.

Women should have an internist, gynecologist, or breast doctor perform a breast exam at least yearly, if not twice each year.
